Treatment Options

In accordance with The American Society of Addiction Medicine, we believe treatment should be tailored to the needs of the individual and guided by an individualized treatment plan that is developed in consultation with the client.  The treatment plan should be based on a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment of the patient and when possible an evaluation of the family is conducted as well. For this reason, we do not offer a "one size fits all" treatment approach.

We accept the notion that individuals that seek counseling for problematic substance use and dependence are at various stages in the change process and need to work at their own pace as they develop competency in new behaviors.  Our goal is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment where this can be accomplished.  We utilize a primarily humanistic & client centered harm reduction approach, coupled with innovative and evidence based counseling and treatment practices such as Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

We believe that by meeting the client where they are and working with them to reduce the discomfort and risk they are experiencing, we are granted an opportunity and privilege. We accept our role as expert witnesses to the decisions our clients make about their lives. We give feedback, counseling and coaching as permitted and appropriate with the goal of assisting them in achieving their targeted behavior change.

Alcohol & Drug Assessments: This is generally the first step in the process of developing a treatment plan for our clients.  The assessment consists of a clinical interview and any other assessment instruments deemed appropriate by the counselor to complete a thorough evaluation.  The process generally takes between 60-90 minutes.  In addition an alcohol and drug screen may be given if indicated or requested. The purpose of the assessment is to determine the methods, intensity, frequency and types of services provided. A counselor’s decision to prescribe a type of service is based on how that treatment and its duration will not only influence the resolution of the dysfunction, but also positively alter the prognosis for long-term outcome.

Individual Counseling: We provide counseling, psychotherapy & consultation for individuals who will benefit form the one-on-one approach this setting provides. In some cases individuals choose to meet with a counselor in this environment because they are not comfortable with the idea of the traditional group setting.  In other cases, individual sessions are used to enrich or deepen the treatment experience by providing a greater level of support and accountability.

Counseling for the Family: We believe that through individual, group and family counseling, family members of those who are using substances in a problematic manner can make an important contribution to the treatment of their significant other. The family can play a powerful role in helping to engage the substance user.  In many cases, the substance user reports that it was the pressure or influence of their family that led them to treatment. In addition and of equal importance, the concerned significant others can benefit from the counseling process by becoming more independent and reducing their depression, anxiety and anger symptoms even if their loved one does not enter treatment.

ASAM Level I Outpatient Groups: Research shows that many individuals reduce the harm to themselves, their families, and their communities by learning more about drugs and alcohol and by developing strategies to manage their drug and alcohol use. We provide group counseling and education for individuals mandated to treatment as well as those seeking care from a more voluntary position. Using a behavior change model our groups are either aimed at DISCOVERY (the process of gaining awareness and moving toward the determination to change) or MAINTENANCE (the process of reinforcing the commitment to action in changing behaviors).
