About Me

Mark  Brechtel is a clinical psychologist licensed to practice in Georgia.  He provides general counseling, psychotherapy,  psychological assessments, and other services to individual adults and older  teens, as well as partners, couples and families.  He also  provides assessment and treatment for substance use issues and addictions.

My Education

Dr. Brechtel obtained his bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Colorado in 1997.  He earned numerous academic awards while at UCD, including being named to the Dean's List, being awarded an "Academic Athlete Award" for completing his degree with a 4.0 GPA, and being named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

Dr. Brechtel earned his doctorate in Counseling Psychology, with a minor in Phenomenological and Existential Psychology, from the University of Florida in 2003.  He was awarded the first 4-year J. Hillis Miller Presidential Fellowship at UF, as well as the McLaughlin Dissertation Fellowship for his research on mentoring.  He completed a one year internship at the University of Kansas' Counseling and Psychological Services center, and a one year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Georgia Counseling and Psychiatric Services center.

Dr. Brechtel is currently working on a post-doctoral master's degree in Psychopharmacology at Fairleigh Dickenson University.  While the Georgia legislature has not yet made the choice to allow licensed Psychologists who are fully trained and certified in psychopharmacology to prescribe medications for their patients (as have some other states), many people are working to promote legislation that would allow individuals to obtain their mental health prescriptions from mental health practitioners.
